Residents bought tickets to purchase our own ambulance for the fire department. I guess they must have had prizes to sell the tickets, I sold them when I was a kid.
Above shows the disappearing brick house that was built by the German man who brought the bricks home in the basket of his bicycle. The picture was taken right across from the fire house that was on San Bruno Avenue and Glen Park Way.
The volunteer fireman would bring people home from the hospital as well as transport ill residents. Can you imagine trying to do that now; there wouldn't be a chance because of insurance,etc."
